Damage caused by care products in a washing machine

Before we start this article you may rest assured this is not a fault with your washing machine, and it is not necessary to call in an engineer.

What you may have noticed is white streaks appearing on darker coloured or heavy cotton items, particularly denim, even if you have been using a detergent which is recommended for use with colours.

If you have noticed this problem with your towels, it may be the result of a particular type of hair product used by a member of the family, or a guest.

What could have caused these white streaks?

  • Household bleach has come into contact with a particular garment
  • Acne cream, which may contain peroxide, may have been used around the garment, or hands dried on the towel for instance
  • Hair products may have been used that have caused this particular effect on contact with towels

Can I remove the white streaks?

Unfortunately it is not possible to recover the garment to its original colour, but most items should be able to be successfully dyed.  However, be aware that if the garment has been in contact with bleach, the dye may not adhere well to the garment.
