Dull Surfaces on Dishes Washed in a Dishwasher

When unloading your dishwasher it is is very disappointing to note everything is looking very dull, and almost if it has a film over the surface. Unfortunately, all these dishes will need to be re-washed before they are used again.Although not impossible, it is highly unlikely this is caused by a fault with your dishwasher.  You will only be able to determine what has caused the problem if you follow the steps that are outlined below.

Most probable cause:

  • If you are in a hard water area it could well be you are not using sufficient salt in your dishwasher.  It is essential that dishwasher salt is used, and your appliance will have some of indication, whether a beep or a light, to signal that your salt reservoir needs to be replenished.  Even if you use the all-in-one type of detergent you will still need to use dishwasher salt unless you are in a soft water area.
  • Thin starchy film, due to poor cleaning.  It is essential you carry out a regular cleaning routine to ensure that everything is as clean and unclogged as possible.  It is also a good idea to use one of the various dishwasher clean products that you can buy at any supermarket.  These are very useful and can ensure your dishwasher gives you a long service.
  • Thin detergent film due to excessive detergent or poor rinsing.  Again, regular cleaning, plus the use of the professional cleaner, will ensure that there is no problem with the rinsing cycle.
  • Use of too harsh detergent can cause dulling of your china.  In most cases, your everyday dishwasher load is not that soiled, and a more gentle detergent is recommended.  Also you should use a proprietary rinse aid product on a regular basis.  This also helps with the rinsing procedure.

Hopefully these steps will help to bring your china back to its normal shiny finish.  You can either handwash your dull dishes or rewash in the dishwasher once you have carried out the above suggestions.

If, however, this has not fully resolved the issue, you may need to call in an engineer, as you may have a fault with the dishwasher.  Having carried out the above steps before you call the engineer, he will have a much clearer idea of what the problem could be and will certainly save time and, therefore, reduce the costs.
