Washing machine installation faults and advice information

Washing Machine Faults Relating to Installation

The most important thing you can do before installing your washing machine is to read through the Manufacturer’s Instructions, plus the Manual for your particular model. Read both through first to familiarise yourself with how the information is presented, then read both again to ensure you fully understand the installation process, and the general operational methods.

If you have only just installed your machine and are having problems, there are a few things you can check before calling in a Service Engineer under the terms of your Warranty. If it is a self-inflicted problem, you will most certainly be charged for the visit by the Engineer as it will fall outside the terms of your Warranty. The following points are therefore intended to try to save you wasting your hard-earned money.

Washing machine vibrates when in use:

  • Check that the machine is as level as it could be, especially on a wooden floor. Your Installation Instructions will detail how you can adjust the feet to give you a level machine. With a wooden floor you may need to add extra supports under the feet of the machine to try to reduce the vibration.

  • Check that all the transit packaging has been removed, how to do this should be detailed in your Installation Instructions. Its a very common problem, caused in the main by people anxious to get the machine up and running quickly, and failing to check everything first.

If you called out an Engineer for either of these problems, its more or less guaranteed that you would be given a bill – always best to be avoided.

Washing machine is leaking:

  • Check your hoses have been connected properly. Please be careful to avoid over-tightening the hoses, as this can break the connection. As a rule of thumb, only hand tighten the hoses, and then just a quarter turn more.

Water is leaking from the soap box:

  • This could be caused by the speed of the water fill. This is very easily rectified, simply adjust the water valve until you have resolved the issue.

  • There could also be a blockage in the soap box, which can happen after quite a few washes. Remove and thoroughly clean the soap box. If it is particularly sticky, try pouring boiling water through it (when out of the machine), but please mind your hands when you do this. Once its clean, replace in the machine.

  • If either of the above actions do not rectify the problem, you may well have to call out an Engineer, this should then be covered under the Warranty if it is a fault in the machine.

Machine is not filling with hot water:

  • Before doing anything, please read through your manual to ensure there is a hot water fill, as most modern washing machines are only cold fill. Simple check, but this could save you money in the long run.

    Issues encountered following installation

Before calling an Engineer, please check the filter is clear and unblocked. Blocked filters are the most common cause of machines not spinning or draining.

If the the machine continues to fill when it is switched on, please check your plumbing is connected correctly, particularly if the machine is backfilling with dirty water. This indicates the drain may not have been installed correctly. Go back to your Installation Instructions and check that each step has been followed. Even if you have installed previous machines, the more modern machines are far more efficient and effective, but each runs under a different system so you can’t assume you know where the pipes should all go.

Please check your User Manual as a first point of call if a programme does not immediately go to spin and drain.  Some programmes on machines hold your laundry, especially the shorter washes, or programmes for more delicate fabrics. This is intended to give you the choice of going through the normal spin/drain routine, or purely to drain the items without spinning.

The most important thing to remember before you ever call out an Engineer is to check to ensure you have installed the washing machine exactly as the Manufacturer dictates. Also to read through the Manual from cover to cover so that you are satisfied you understand all the different programmes your new machine runs. This will not only enable you to select the correct programme to get the best results from your washing, but also to avoid calling out an Engineer as you believe the machine is faulty if it does not work as you expect.

Obviously, if you have exhausted every check, cleaned out the soap box and the filter and the machine still does not work, your only option is to call in the Service Engineer via your Warranty, if still in force.
