Colour damage from my washing machine

Unfortunately this problem generally shows as a reddish brown strain on the fabric, usually around zips or metal buttons.  You may rest assured this is not a fault with your washing machine, and it is unnecessary to call out an engineer.

Unfortunately there is no way to remove these stains once they have appeared.

It is very difficult washing this type of garment, but you can help yourself by:

  • Following the washing instructions on the label attached to the garment.  You should always check the label when a garment is new before you wash it for the first time, but with a garment that has metal zips, buttons or decorations, it is very important.
  • Try to wash these types of garments together, and keep them on the shortest wash possible.
  • Remove the items immediately at the end of the wash cycle and dried in accordance with the care label
  • You should always look for a good quality item when purchasing this type of garment.  The better the quality, the less likely this problem will occur.  There are many lower priced garments that will wash very well but it is probably a false economy to buy this type of garment at the lowest price as, unfortunately, the old maxim ‘you get what you pay for’ will likely become apparent.

One other suggestion is to run the washing machine through a rinse cycle before washing this type of garment, to avoid using standing water in the hoses.  This may help, especially if you live in an area with a high copper content in your water supply.
