Colour fading in my washing machine

You may have noticed that some of your larger items, such as bedspreads or curtains, appear to have faded when you have put them through your washing machine.  This has not been caused by your washing machine,  the detergent or fabric conditioner you are using.

This has generally been caused over a period of time due to exposure to sunlight.  Sunlight may cause fading of larger items, especially items that are not taken down and washed on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, once fading has occurred, it is not possible to return the item to its original colour.  You may be able to dye the item a different colour, especially if you choose a colour slightly darker shade than the original, but this may not always be successful as you could still have lighter areas visible.

Some suggestions for prevention in the future:

  • Ensure your curtains are lined, as this will protect the material
  • Install blinds to your windows, as this will also help to prevent fading both for your curtains, and bed covers – especially on south facing windows.
  • If you are airing or drying larger items in the fresh air, try not to leave them outside for too long as this could result in further damage by sunlight.
