Distortion of plastic items in your dishwasher

It can be very annoying when you take your plastic storage pots from the dishwasher and the lid no longer fits.  This is not a fault with the dishwasher, so don’t worry that something major has occurred.

Generally this is caused by one or more of the following:

  • Your plastic items are not dishwasher safe.  You should check before you buy that anything you purchase that you envisage washing in the dishwasher have the label stating dishwasher safe.  Any cheaper items of plastic that are not covered by this disclaimer, you should hand wash.
  • Using a wash cycle that has too high a temperature – you should ensure that you only wash your plastic items in a lower temperature cycle.  Too hot temperatures can cause the plastic molecules to break down and distort the shape of the product
  • Distortion can take place when you overload the dishwasher, and try to push these plastic items into too small a space.  Squashing the item and then washing in high temperatures can easily distort the shape of the item.
  • Low quality plastic items, as these are made from poor material that are too light and, therefore, distort in hot water

Unfortunately, once these items have become distorted in shape, there is nothing you can do to bring them back to their original condition.

It is a far better idea to buy a better quality product that is dishwasher safe to extend the shelf life of this type of product.  Make sure you load plastic items on the top basket as the temperature is not as high as the bottom basket.  Avoid high temperature wash cycles. Do not try to squeeze a plastic item into too small a gap.

If you follow the above, this problem should disappear.
