Pattern Fading On Plates And Crockery In Your Dishwasher

It is very disappointing when you notice that the colour and/or pattern is fading from your china after regularly being washed in your dishwasher.  Unfortunately, this is a permanent effect but is not caused by a fault with your dishwasher.

Common reasons include:

  • Very soft water
  • Overdosing or too strong detergent
  • Aggressive or commercial detergents

How to avoid in future

This kind of colour or pattern fading, is the removal of metal ions from the coloured area and this is very often the result of very soft water.  A part of the detergent is designed to remove calcium ions from the water, but if there are few ions present, as in the case of soft water areas, this can cause the metal ions to be removed from the coloured pattern.

You should check if you are in a soft water area, as you should be able to find a more suitable and gentle detergent.

You should also ensure that any china you buy is dishwasher proof.

Keep away from harsh detergents and change to the gel cal type of detergent, and always buy a known brand that you can rely on.  If you check into this you may well find there are specific products that claim to be suitable for a soft water area.
