Plate Damage in a Dishwasher

It is very unfortunate when you notice that the rims of your delicate china has been chipped whilst going through a washing cycle in the dishwasher.

The first thing you should do when purchasing china is to check the label to ensure that it is dishwasher proof.  Very often plates and cups and saucers with gold or silver rims are not recommended for dishwashing at all.  This is because the rims are very soft and delicate and it is very easy to damage them.

If you are happy that your china is suitable to be washing in the dishwasher you should take extra care when loading.  Try to avoid putting too much together, as very often the plates or cups can be pushed together during the cycle, and the vibration of this action can damage the rims.  Also try not to have your cutlery basket in close proximity to your more delicate items, as the cutlery can cause damage.

As a general rule, as with delicate items of clothing, you may find that your best china may last longer if you hand wash them.
