Problems with Aluminium Items in a Dishwasher

You may have noticed that the finish of your aluminium items have become dull over time, as well as noticing black marks on some plates or glasses. This is not a problem with your dishwasher, and there is not a need to call out an engineer.

  • Natural oxidization of aluminium, resulting in a dull finish after going through dishwasher cycles
  • Cutlery being allowed to scrape the surface during food preparation
  • Black marks which can be found on china or glass are more than likely caused by coming into contact with aluminium items during the wash cycle of your dishwasher.

Unfortunately once these items have been affected, there is nothing you can do as the aluminium itself will stay dull, and it is almost impossible to remove the black marks from china or glass.

In order to avoid this in the future, it is not recommended that aluminium items should be washed in a dishwasher.

You should avoid using metal implements for mixing or scraping an aluminium item, use either wooden or plastic instead.

In future, check that any cookery items you purchase have a label clearly stating they are dishwasher safe.  Do check specialist knives for instance, as very often they are not recommended to be washed in a dishwasher.

The type of detergent you use will not have any impact on this kind of problem, as basically it is the aluminium item itself that is not suitable for use in a dishwasher.
