Review: KEEPING MY "OLD" HOTPOINT BUILT IN DOUBLE OVEN GOING
These circular oven elements are about 20% of the price of the genuine Hotpoint replacement and thus are good value. However, I have had to replace 5 elements over the past 7 or 8 years in order to keep the oven operational and thus cook the Sunday roast dinner. The problem is that they do not sit around the fan exactly and also prevent the back oven liner from fitting properly. Thus they are prone to "hot spots" which in my opinion results in a relatively short life. I have found that I can get about 18 months out of an element if I leave the fan running for about 20 minutes after switching the oven (heating) off, this helps to cool the element down. Prior to this action I found that the elements lasted barely 12 months. If these substitute elements (non Hotpoint) could be designed and sized exactly as the originals, then I think they would last much longer. I have to decide soon whether to keep on repairing the oven unit or alternatively to spend about £600 on a complete new double oven ? But the trouble is that when the element fails I simply get a new £20 element and get it working again and put off the "expensive decision making" !
