Initially I thought it was the switch that was faulty but after tie wrapping it up and connecting it to the mains,the motor worked OK which proved it was the handle that had split at the joint.
The new handle turned up after a few days and I fitted it immediately.
The mower now works fine.
Saves buying a new mower ????
